The life-cycle of water pipes is lengthy, but, like anything else, they won’t last forever. If you are wondering whether or not it is time to consider replacing your old water pipes, be on the lookout for these warning signs:

Frequent Leaks

One of the most common – and most costly – signs of worn-out pipes is frequent leaks. If you have been experiencing an increasing number of water pipe leaks in recent months or have been seeing signs of leaks such as mold or mildew it may be time to consider replacing your pipes.

Discolored Water

If you notice that your water is at all discolored, it’s likely that your pipes need to be replaced. Water discoloration is often caused by rust building up on the inside of your pipes. It can also lead to your water tasting odd, can stain your porcelain fixtures and can cause your water to harden.

Corrosion

You may not be able to notice corrosion on the inside of your pipes unless it discolors your water, however, you can notice it on the outside of the pipes. If your pipe tubing is dimpling or flaking at all, it’s a sign of pretty significant corrosion. Be sure to check your pipes for these signs of outward corrosion and call a Pittsburgh Plumber to replace your pipes if you notice any dimpling or flaking.Water leaking out of a pipe on water heater.

Stains

Water leaks are not always as noticeable as a busted pipe spewing water. Instead, you may have look for less obvious signs that your pipes are leaking water such as stains underneath your sink, on your walls and on the ceiling of a room below a second-story bathroom.

Low Water Pressure

Another sign of pipe corrosion is low water pressure. As corrosion builds up on the inside of a pipe, it can begin to restrict the diameter of the pipe, reducing the flow of water that gets through. While there are other causes for low water pressure as well, if your water pressure has been on the decline then replacing your pipes may be the solution.

Replacing Your Water Pipes

If you have been noticing any of the signs listed above, it may be time to consider replacing your water pipes. Problems such as these will only worsen as time goes on, and it’s much better to deal with them now and limit the damage that they cause.
